BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin accused the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday of protecting Barack Obama by withholding a videotape of the Democrat attending a 2003 party for a Palestinian-American professor and critic of Israel. The paper said it had written about the event in April and would not release the tape because of a promise to the source who provided it.
McCain and Palin called Rashid Khalidi a former spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organization, a characterization Khalidi has denied in the past. Both candidates said guests at the party made critical comments about Israel.
Khalidi is a professor of Middle East Studies at Columbia University and a longtime friend of Obama's. Khalidi has publicly criticized Israel, but he and Obama have both said they hold very different opinions on Israeli issues.
McCain also has ties to Khalidi through a group Khalidi helped found 15 years ago. The Center for Palestine Research and Studies received at least $448,000 from an organization McCain chairs.
On Wednesday, McCain said 1960s radical Bill Ayers had attended the same party in 2003. McCain and Palin have criticized Obama for his ties to Ayers and questioned what the videotape of the party might o! News

5. Salman Rushdie (1947 - )
Salman Rushdie - Google SearchA lot of people think that literature is just, well, a particularly brainy sort of fun, not dangerous at all. But woe to those who step out of line.
In 1989 Indian novelist Salman Rushdie published a novel titled The Satanic Verses. On October 14, 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini, theocratic ruler of Iran, published a hukm against Rushdie for his novel because some parts were considered blasphemous against certain tenets of Islam. The text of the hukm was pretty serious: "I call on all zealous Muslims to execute [Rushdie and all those involved in publishing the book] quickly, wherever they may be found, so that no one else will dare to insult the Muslim sanctities."
Rushdie was forced to go into hiding for several years, but he continued to publish. The bounty on his head was raised to more than $5 million. With the death of Khomeini and comparative relaxation of Iranian politics, however, Rushdie's begun to make public appearances again.
Candidates Support IRV Important Three-Way Races – IRV Could Make the Difference Help Make IRV a Reality in Minnesota: Contribute IRV Lawsuit Update IRV around the Country Working Together for A Better Democracy
Minnesota Candidates Support IRV
As we rapidly approach November 4, IRV is in use and on the ballot in many places around the country – and candidates and organizations here in Minnesota are hoping to see it in use here soon. Find out here if your legislators and candidates support IRV. If they do, thank them! If not, then talk to them about IRV and why it deserves their support.
Important Three-Way Races – IRV Could Make the Difference
As third parties have gained prominence in Minnesota, people have speculated what the effects will be. This year, two critical races showcase how our voting system breaks down when more than two candidates compete: the U.S. Senate race, the open congressional seat in the 3rd District and the campaign for State House District 41A.
In the U.S. Senate race, we have incumbent GOP Senator Norm Coleman facing DFLer Al Franken and Independence Party candidate Dean Barkley. Although polling shows a dead heat between Coleman and Franken, neither is polling close to 50 percent. Dean Barkley is garnering about 18 percent of the vote. That makes it likely that a candidate will win without a majority.
In Congressional District 3, Republican Erik Paulsen, DFLer Ashwin Madia and Independence Party candidate David Dillon are running to fill the seat being vacated by nine-term GOP Rep. Jim Ramstad. Polling shows top runners Paulsen and Madia in a tight race with Dillon taking about eight percent of the vote. The winner here also may gain less than majority support.
In State House District 41A, incumbent Republican – now independent – Rep. Ron Erhardt is facing GOP nominee Keith Downey and DFLer Kevin Staunton. Nine-term Rep. Erhardt was defeated in his bid for Republican endorsement following his support for the transportation bill and subsequent veto override last February. There’s been no polling done, but those watching believe it’s very close.
In all of these races, IRV could make a decisive difference. What if all voters knew they could cast their vote for their candidate of choice without “wasting” it? What if we could be assured that the winner was supported by a majority rather than just a plurality of voters regardless of how many candidates were on the ballot?
We won’t find out this year, but these elections present yet another opportunity to raise awareness about the need for a more effective voting system.

IRV Lawsuit Update
As we’ve been reporting, FairVote Minnesota is a co-defendant in a lawsuit challenging IRV’s constitutionality and the right of the people of Minneapolis to use IRV in city elections.
On October 8, we had our first day in court. This date was set to hear arguments in the case, but the plaintiffs delayed the arguments by introducing a new reason they don’t like IRV. To ensure that all the issues are fully covered, the judge has permitted the additional complaint and has provided FairVote Minnesota and the City of Minneapolis the opportunity to respond.
Response briefs are due November 6. At that time, the judge will issue a schedule to hear arguments in the case. We expect the judge to rule expeditiously once arguments are heard.
Not all the IRV action is in Minnesota – in fact, it’s all over the country!
Voters in Pierce County, Wash., adopted IRV in 2006 and will begin using it this year to elect county officials. Robin Garwood, FairVote Minnesota Board member and Policy Aide to Minneapolis Councilmember Cam Gordon will be traveling to Pierce County to observe the elections and bring back important lessons for Minneapolis implementation next year.
There also are IRV measures on ballots in several cities, most prominently in Memphis, Tenn., and Cincinnati, Ohio, where voters will have the opportunity to bring back proportional representation to their city council.

Each of these organizations support IRV, and FairVote Minnesota works closely with them to advance a continuum of critical election reforms to make democracy work better in Minnesota. We hope you’ll visit their websites and help make sure Minnesota’s elections work for all voters.

Still trying to recover from her controversial remarks about Barack Obama and Congress last week, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann on Friday aired a television ad in which she admits only to a verbal fumble.
"I may not always get my words right, but I know that my heart is right because my heart is for you, for your children and for the blessings of liberty to remain for our great country," said Bachmann, R-Minn., who has suddenly found herself in a tight race with her challenger, Democrat El Tinklenberg.
The ad doesn't refer directly to her televised statements last week that the Democratic presidential nominee "may have anti-American views'' and the media should look into whether members of Congress are "anti-American." She has since backed off those statements, saying she regretted using the term "anti-American,'' doesn't believe Obama is "anti-American'' and "made a big mistake'' appearing on the MSNBC program "Hardball.''
Still, Bachmann's words gave a big boost to Tinklenberg, who has since raised almost $1.5 million and pulled slightly ahead of Bachmann in two polls.
Dear Friend,
When it comes to fiscal issues, Congresswoman Michelle Bachman is a strong ally in Washington. She recently stood up with me and voted against the massive Wall Street Bailout, a politically difficult, principled stand for which she should be commended.
Michelle also serves with me on the House Financial Services Committee where she is a consistent ally in our efforts to shine light on the Federal Reserve. Her recent Op-Ed in the Washington Times demonstrates her leadership on the Monetary Issue.
As you may have heard, Congresswoman Bachman has recently come under attack by the liberal media. Her opponent has capitalized and raised some big money in a short period of time. There is even talk of a write-in candidate with no chance of winning that would only syphon votes away from Michelle.
At this time when big government forces are grabbing more and more power, we can not afford to lose a fiscally principled Representative like Michelle Bachman in the Congress. Please join me in supporting Michelle in any way you feel comfortable and, most importantly, please make sure you get the polls and vote for her on November 4th.
