Broken Government Project

Sharon,

The Center for Public Integrity is completing one of the most successful years in its nearly 20-year history.

Thanks to your support during 2008, we generated 7 major investigative projects, 70 individual reports, 4 searchable databases, and 9 podcasts. The Center was cited more than 1,000 times in other major media outlets. We’ve seen record traffic to our website and our daily PaperTrail blog. And, we received 4 prestigious national journalism awards. Most recently, our groundbreaking Broken Government investigation identified some 128 failures of government over the last eight years. It has been widely cited in year-end reporting and assessments of the Bush Administration’s legacy.

Read more below for more coverage on our latest project, Broken Government.

We couldn’t do what we do without your help. With friends of the Center for Public Integrity like you, we’ll continue this success through 2009 and beyond, despite a challenging economic environment.

Thanks again for your very important backing and best wishes for the holidays and the New Year.

Broken Government
Just how bad is our government dysfunction? In an effort to answer that question, CPI embarked on an examination of the worst systematic failures of the federal government over the past eight years. In Broken Government, a comprehensive assessment of these failures, we found more than 125 examples of government breakdown in areas as diverse as education, energy, the environment, the military and veterans affairs, health care, financial management, consumer and worker safety, and more. While some are, by now, depressingly familiar, many are less well-known but equally distressing. And though the list is diverse, it also reflects some recurring — and troubling — themes. Suit contesting Barack Obama's citizenship heads to U.S. Supreme Court

    By James Janega
    Chicago Tribune

    CHICAGO _ The U.S. Supreme Court will consider Friday whether to take up a lawsuit challenging President-elect Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship, a continuation of a New Jersey case embraced by some opponents of Obama's election.

    The meeting of justices will coincide with a vigil by the filer's supporters in Washington on the steps of the nation's highest court.

    The suit originally sought to stay the election, and was filed on behalf of Leo Donofrio against New Jersey Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells.

    Legal experts say the appeal has little chance of succeeding, despite appearing on the court's schedule. Legal records show it is only the tip of an iceberg of nationwide efforts seeking to derail Obama's election over accusations that he either wasn't born a U.S. citizen or that he later renounced his citizenship in Indonesia.

    The Obama campaign has maintained that he was born in Hawaii, has an authentic birth certificate, and is a "natural-born" U.S. citizen. Hawaiian officials agree.

    Among those filing lawsuits is Alan Keyes, who lost to Obama in the 2004 Illinois Senate race. Keyes' suit seeks to halt certification of votes in California. Another suit by a Kentucky man seeks to have a federal judge review Obama's original birth certificate, which Hawaiian officials say is locked in a state vault.

    Other suits have been filed by Andy Martin, whose case was dismissed in Hawaii, and by an Ohio man whose case also was dismissed. Five more suits,

    Supremes to Review Citizenship Arguments
    Case challenging candidacy set for December 5th
    'conference' of Supreme Court justices

    A case that challenges President-elect Barack Obama's name on the 2008 election ballot citing questions over his citizenship has been scheduled for a "conference" at the U.S. Supreme Court on December 5 — this Friday!

    Conferences are private meetings of the justices at which they review cases and decide which ones to accept for formal review. If only four of the nine justices vote to hear the case in full, oral arguments may be scheduled.

    Here's How YOU Can Help:

    You and 125,000 others have already signed the WND petition on this issue. If even a tiny percentage of you can respond to help us take the next step, the justices will know that millions of concerned Americans believe passionately that the Constitution must be followed to the letter.

    Because the Supreme Court justices do not accept faxes or emails or telephone calls, there is only one way to make your voice heard in time for Friday's preliminary hearing — overnight delivery of your letters.

    To make that process simpler, more convenient and less expensive, WND has devised a plan to get the following letter sent on your behalf by FedEx to each of the nine justices by Friday's hearing:

    Supreme Court of the United States
    One First Street, NE
    Washington, DC 20543

    Dear Associate Justice Thomas:

    If the Constitution doesn't mean precisely what it says, then America is no longer a nation under the rule of law.

    A nation no longer under the rule of law is, by definition, under the rule of men.

    Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution clearly stipulates "No person except a natural born Citizen" shall be eligible to serve as president of the United States. That statement has clear meaning, and the Supreme Court of the United States is one of the controlling legal authorities in ensuring that the Constitution is enforced - even if doing so may prove awkward.

    With the Electoral College set to make its determination Dec. 15 that Barack Hussein Obama Jr. be the next president of the United States, the Supreme Court is holding a conference Friday to review a case challenging his eligibility for the office based on Article 2, Section 1.

    I urge you to take this matter most seriously - and judge it only on the clear, unambiguous words of the Constitution: A president must, at the very least, be a "natural born citizen" of the United States.

    If you agree that this clear constitutional requirement still matters, the Supreme Court must use its authority to establish, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Barack Hussein Obama Jr. qualifies for the office under that standard.

    There is grave, widespread and rapidly growing concern throughout the American public that this constitutional requirement is being overlooked and enforcement neglected by state and federal election authorities. It's up to the Supreme Court to dispel all doubt that America's next president is truly a natural born citizen of the United States.

    I urge you to honor the Constitution in this matter and uphold the public trust.

    Sincerely,

    Sharon Anderson

    Second Update: Open Letter to Mr. Obama

    SEE THE EVIDENCE

    In our two prior articles we discussed our intention to publish a full-page open letter to President-Elect Obama in USA TODAY. In effect, the open letter would be a Petition for Redress of a violation of the natural born citizen clause of the Constitution (Article II, Section 1).

    The First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees a citizen’s Right to Petition officials of the Government for Redress (i.e., for a Remedy) of alleged violations of the Constitution. Inherent in the Right to Redress is the citizen’s Right to a response.

    Obama Birth Certificate Petition
    PETITION FOR PUBLIC RELEASE OF
    BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE
    To: Electoral College, Congress of the United States, Federal Elections Commission, U.S. Supreme Court, President of the United States, other controlling legal authorities

    Whereas, by requirement of the United States Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, no one can be sworn into office as president of the United States without being a natural born citizen;

    Whereas, there is sufficient controversy within the citizenry of the United States as to whether presidential election winner Barack Obama was actually born in Hawaii as he claims;

    Whereas, Barack Obama has refused repeated calls to release publicly his entire Hawaiian birth certificate, which would include the actual hospital that performed the delivery;

    Whereas, lawsuits filed in several states seeking only proof of the basic minimal standard of eligibility have been rebuffed;

    Whereas, Hawaii at the time of Obama's birth allowed births that took place in foreign countries to be registered in Hawaii;

    Whereas, concerns that our government is not taking this constitutional question seriously will result in diminished confidence in our system of free and fair elections;

    SIGN THE PETITION

    We, the undersigned, assert our rights as citizens of the United States in demanding that the constitutional eligibility requirement be taken seriously and that any and all controlling legal authorities in this matter examine the complete birth certificate of Barack Obama, including the actual city and hospital of birth, and make that document available to the American people for inspection.

    Whereas the integrity of our elections is the foundation of our republic; and

    Whereas the lack of adequate controls, verifications and audits in Minnesota's voter registration process make it highly vulnerable to errors and abuse; and

    Whereas a review of Minnesota's voter registration rolls have revealed specific examples of suspected errors, omissions, inconsistencies; and

    Whereas Minnesota's same-day voter registration process makes it impossible for an election official to certify that a new registrant is legally qualified to vote prior to casting a ballot; and

    Whereas Minnesota has made substantial investments to ensure the integrity of its ballot counting process and should apply this same standard to its voter registration process; and

    Whereas 24 other states have mitigated some of these problems by enacting laws requiring voters to present identification prior to casting their ballot; and

    Whereas every Minnesota citizen who is legally eligible to vote deserves to know that their vote will be accurately counted and not undermined by gaps in the voter registration process.

    Therefore, I do hereby call for an immediate investigation into apparent irregularities in Minnesota's electoral system and I call upon my elected officials to enact changes in Minnesota law to ensure a more secure, accurate and transparent election system, including:

    • Require voters to produce a government-issued photographic identification in order to vote in an election; and
    • Require the Secretary of State to employ specific data verification and validation techniques to ensure the accuracy and integrity of Minnesota's voter rolls; and
    • Require the Secretary of State to flag voter registration records that fail to meet a specific standard for accuracy and completeness so that these voters can be "challenged" by county election officials at the polls; and
    • Require an annual independent audit of the voter registration system; and
    • Require voters to register at least 30 days prior to an election so that all voters can be certified as being legally qualified to vote prior to casting a ballot on Election Day.
